Tumblr’s ‘meme librarian’ tracks our online obsessions

Last Sunday’s Toronto Star featured Amanda Brennan, the meme librarian for Tumblr.  Ms. Brennan has a MLIS from Rutger’s. At Tumblr, Brennan sifts through thousands of pieces of original content, from vines to videos to text posts — and from there, she catalogs ongoing trends, identifies up-and-coming blogs and documents the latest news in the Tumblrverse.  I must say that this is one of the most creative use of cataloguing that I’ve encountered; I will definitely use this as an example to my students in our cataloguing classes.  As I always tell them, cataloguing is not the purview of just libraries.
