Cataloguing as a public service

This post addresses the important public service aspect of cataloguing. Since much of the work done by cataloguers is behind the scenes,  it is sometimes perhaps easy to forget how much they can offer to public service.  As the author points out, “Promotion is a key component of cataloging and metadata. It is important to explain the value of cataloging and metadata.”  As I’ve said a number of times in class, cataloguers provide an essential service to customers by providing them the means to access items of interest; without this service, we will have a lovely inventory of inaccessible resources.
